Economic collapse, materialism and social disarray: Welcome to America, 1935.
Audiences find themselves in a familiar landscape with Amerrycan Theatre´s gutsy new one-man show about the Wall Street millionaire who hit rock bottom and created Alcoholics Anonymous in 1935, later becoming the only individual to turn down a Nobel Peace Prize.
‘My Name is Bill’ casts a new light on timeless social issues, telling the funny, gripping and heart-wrenching true story of Bill Wilson, one of the most intelligent investment bankers of the 20th century who descended into the depths of destructive alcoholism during the Great Depression.
About the Play
We discover Bill alone and newly sober, abandoned in a hotel lobby after the collapse of a crucial business deal. His drink obsession returns and in desperation, he invites the audience into his alcoholic mind. With black humour and crackling wit, he unreels an eerily familiar story of his quest for fame, materialism and belonging. The suspense and anguish reaches its climax with a phone call that heralded his redemption and that of struggling alcoholics across the world.
Audiences have found ‘My Name is Bill’ inspiring and informative: “…It blended great entertainment with useful information about a growing problem.” Leeds Institute of Medical Education
